August 9, 1942 Sunk by Japanese aircraft from Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu in the Bay of Bengal 26 mi. SSE of Batticaola, Celyon (Sir Lanka) at 07.30N - 82.00E HMAS Vampire was escorting HMS Hermes at the time of the attack, both ships were lost. Eight crewmen were killed and one died four days later from wounds received in the loss. Survivors were picked up by HMHS Vita and taken to Colombo. (Roll of Honour) |
