While escorting a convoy on February 21, 1945 which consisted of about 50 LSTs and LSMs from San Pedro Bay to Subic Bay, Philippines the destroyer USS Renshaw DD-499 was rocked by an explosion. A torpedo fired from an enemy submarine slammed into the starboard side of the ship causing extensive damage. A total loss of power and water pouring into the ship should have spelled doom, but excellent damage control by the crew saved the ship. She was towed back to San Pedro Bay and was repaired. While the ship was saved, nineteen men were lost in the attack. These were the only known combat casualties suffered by Renshaw during the Second World War. (Note: I have not been able to identify which if any Japanese submarine was in the area at the time of the attack.) |
