Daily Event for September 11, 2013

The 255' long steamer Copia was built in 1876 by Schlesinger, Davis & Company of Newcastle. She was launched on Feb. 12, 1876 and completed later that year. Only two years later she would be another North Atlantic mystery. She sailed from Barrow on September 11, 1878 (some reports give the date as Sept. 10) carrying a cargo of 1,594 tons of steel rails. The 1,529 ton ship was heading to Montreal, but by November no hope remained that she would be found. The last time she was spoken of was Oct. 10 when she was sighted off Farther Point, after which she and her crew were never heard of again. To the best of my knowledge, over 130 years later, the wreck has not been found.
