Daily Event for September 11, 2010

September 11, 1919 at the yard of Harland & Wolff in Belfast the Arundel Castle was launched. She was the largest ship launched at their yard since 1914 and would be the largest ship on the South African route. She was laid down as Amroth Castle, but her name was changed before launch. During the war she served as a troopship and a POW exchange ship making six exchange voyages. The first four stacker built for Union Castle she was the last of the four funnel liners to be in service sailing well into the 1950's, although two of her funnels had been removed in the late 30's. Her sister, Windsor Castle was sunk during the war and Arundel Castle was finally scrapped in 1959.
