During a night time patrol off the coast of Scotland the cruiser HMS Argyll ran aground on Bell Rock. The light on Bell Rock had been turned out because of U-boat activity, but could be turned on if requested, and the captain of Argyll had made such a request, but his message had not been received. The cruiser was badly damaged, but the destroyers HMS Jackal and HMS Hornet removed the entire crew with no casualties. Salvage efforts were made and much of her equipment and her guns were removed, but the ship was a total loss and was later blown up.
