October 22, 1941 the cruiser Agano was launched at the Sasebo Navy Yard in Sasebo, Japan. The namesake of the class was sunk by USS Skate SS-204 on Feb. 17, 1944, the survivors were picked up by the destroyer Oite, and were all killed shortly thereafter when that ship was sunk by U.S. aircraft.
