She slipped down the ways at Devonport Dockyard at 5:30 p.m. August 6, 1910 in the rain. Lady Clifden had christened her with a bottle of Colonial wine saying "I name this ship Lion. May God bless her and all who sail in her". And with that the largest warship to date built at Devonport slid into the water. The battlecruiser Lion served at the Battle of the Heligoland Bight, was flagship at the Battle of Dogger Bank and fought at the Battle of Jutland, where one of her crew, Maj. Francis J. W. Harvey, R.M., was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions which may have saved the ship from destruction. In 1924 this valiant warrior was scrapped in Scotland.
