Daily Event for September 8

Sept. 8, 1892 The Cunard liner Campania was launched at Fairfield Shipbuilding in Govan, Scotland. She served
the line until 1914 even holding the Blue Riband in 1893. She was the first twin screw liner built for Cunard
and in 1901 became the first Cunarder fitted with the Marconi wireless.

She was bought by the Admiralty in 1914 and converted into an aircraft carrier, but was sunk in the Firth of
Forth on Nov. 5, 1918, just a few days before the war ended. She had broken her mooring lines and drifted
into the battleship HMS Revenge, fortunately there were no casualties.
