Amidships view of HMAS Sydney circa 1938-39, a Supermarine Seagull MkV (A2-9) 9 R.A.A.F. Squadron can be seen on the catapult. This aircraft crashed Feb. 8, 1943 during a training flight, all three crewmen were lost.

June 21, 1940: The Supermarine Seagull MkV (A2-21) 9 R.A.A.F. Squadron from HMAS Sydney after cash landing in Mersa Matruh, Egypt. The aircraft was on a bombardment spotting mission over Bardia, Libya when it was attacked by R.A.F. Gloster Gladiator aircraft. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Thomas McBride Price, R.A.A.F., was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his skill in getting the damaged aircraft to the ground safely. The two other crewmen, Lt. Commander Jack C. Bacon, R.N. (observer) and Telegraphist William S. Fibbens, R.A.N. (gunner), were both lost when HMAS Sydney was sunk on Nov. 19, 1941.
