PS Pevensey built 1911. Picture taken on the Murray River at the town of Echuca in 1983 and shows the vessel moored at the Echuca Wharf, built in 1865. This wharf has 3 levels to cater for the variable height of the Murray River during times of flood and drought. Following completion of the railway linking Melbourne and Echuca in 1864, the Port of Echuca quickly became the largest inland port in Australia. The paddle-steamers were at their peak between 1865 and 1910 servicing many towns and farm stations along the Murray-Darling River system on which lumber, wool and other produce were ferried to Echuca and transferred for railing to Melbourne and export. Expansion of the rail and road networks saw the demise of the river trade and by the 1920s the wharf had fallen into disuse. The Pevensey was featured as the Philadelphia in the series "All The Rivers Run".
