Flashback to N. Scotland, Scapa, Orkneys. May date from March 1945.

 

Passing Gibraltar possibly taken en route to the Pacific in March. 1945.

 

Two Fairey Firefly aircraft of 1771 Squadron based on HMS Implacable at the time. 279 is an F.1, Serial DV133, which 1771 had from November 1944. 278 is an F.R.1, Serial MB444, which 1771 had from May 1945 until a fatal accident on 24th July 1945

Before the days of mirror landing systems a 'bat man', usually a fellow pilot, would aid a pilot landing his aircraft before diving out of its way.
