On September 28, 1944 USS PT-116 and USS PT-167 located two Japanese barges on the northern tip of Halmahera Island, Dutch East Indies. The two boats moved in to destroy the barges with their deck guns. On the first run after fire was opened by the two PT boats, return fire from the beaches was received. The early morning raid destroyed both barges, but one bullet hit a man on PT-167 in the neck, he sadly died two minutes after being hit. After this PT-167 retired, but PT-116 made a second run insuring the destruction of the barges. This boat also received damage, but no personnel were injured. |
