Daily Event for February 23, 2012

February 23, 1944 a fleet of fifteen S-Boats were sent to attack a convoy off the east coast of England. The flotilla found the convoy off Norfolk and began the attack. The escorting ships, HMS Garth L-20 (Capt. Cecil R. L. Parry, R.N.), HMS Southdown L-25 (Lt. Timothy C. U. Fanshawe, R.N.), HM MTBs-609 and 610 moved to intercept. In the malay several torpedoes were reported to have been fired, but none found the mark. In the dark two Schnellboots were lost. S-94 and S-129 collided and both had to be abandoned and later sank. The Admiralty officially stated that Parry in HMS Garth claimed to have destroyed one of the boats with gunfire, but whether this was true or not is unknown to me. I have no casualty figures for either boat.
