Daily Event for October 31, 2010

A launch on Halloween day in 1942 might well have been considered a bad omen. At the Flender Werke in Lübeck, Germany U-308 took to the water for the first time. The Type VIIC boat was completed and commissioned on Dec. 23, 1942 and sent to the Baltic for training. Following training she was given her orders and on May 29, 1943 the boat departed Kiel for her first war patrol. Four days later, June 4, 1943 the boat was found on the surface by HMS Truculent P-315, which fired a spread of six torpedoes at the boat. U-308 exploded and sank with her entire crew.
