Daily Event for October 25, 2010

At 2:30 p.m. on October 25, 1922 the cruiser Raleigh CL-7 was sent down the ways at Bethlehem Steel Corp., Quincy, Massachusetts, the former Fore River Shipbuilding Company. The ship's sponsor was Miss Jennie M. Proctror of Raleigh, North Carolina, the ship's namesake city. She christened the ship with a bottle of spring water from Maine rather than the traditional bottle of champagne. The ship slid into the water with flawless precision and following the launch Miss Proctor was presented with the bottle (the remains of which were retained by a meshwork around the bottle) in a teakwood box with a silver plate noting the name of the ship and the date. She was also presented a jeweled ship's clock. USS Raleigh went on to serve through World War II and was present at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, where she was damaged by a Japanese torpedo during the attack. After the war the ship was sold and scrapped.
