Daily Event for October 12, 2010

On October 12, 1897 the yard of Harland & Wolff in Belfast launched the largest cargo steamship built to date, the 600', 23,000 ton (displacement) Cymric. This was the 36th ship that H&W had built for White Star, and as was the practice for White Star there was no fanfare at the launch. She was intended to be a livestock carrier with capacity for 880 head of cattle and other space for horses, however before she was launched the livestock spaces were removed and Cymric was designated for use for passengers only. Cymric was sunk May 9, 1916 by SMS U-20, the same U-boat which sank the Lusitania one year and 2 days earlier.
