The first submarine built for the Royal Navy was launched at Vickers, Sons & Maxim in Barrow-in-Furness on October 2, 1901. The ceremony was kept private for security reasons and as soon as she was docked at the fitting out quay HMS Hazard came alongside to stand guard over the new boat. The new submarine received no name or pennant number at the launch, but would be known as Holland 1. Of the five Holland type boats built, only Holland 1 was preserved, it is currently on display at the
Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, England. Holland 2 and Holland 3 were scrapped, Holland 4 & 5 still exist, but are at the bottom of the sea, one sunk as a target the other en route to the breakers yard. |
