Daily Event for September 7, 2010

At 9:30 p.m. on September 7, 1907 Cunard's new liner Lusitania departed from Liverpool and headed for New York on her maiden voyage. The largest liner in the world to date her arrival in New York was almost a holiday. Ships of all kinds, including J. P. Morgan's yacht Corsair were on hand to greet the giant when she arrived on Friday the 13th. She did not break the speed record and win the Blue Riband on this voyage as she made only 23.1 knots, but she did break the record on Oct. 10, 1907 at a speed of 23.99 knots. Her first voyage was a success, but several people remarked that she had a very bad vibration. Lusitania of course was lost to SMS
U-20 on May 7, 1915.
