Daily Event for August 11, 2010

August 11, 1900 the 550' long cargo ship Canadian was launched at Hawthorn Leslie & Co, Hebburn-on-Tyne, England for the Leyland Line. The 9,000 ton ship was designed to carry cargo and livestock, with a capacity for 820 head. There were also cabins for 100 passengers, although I must admit I would not be too keen on traveling with a full load of livestock in the heat of the summer as the ship was not air-conditioned. The Canadian served the Leyland Line until April 5, 1917 when SMS U-59 sent her to the bottom.
