December 6, 1942 the aircraft carrier Belleau Wood CV-24 was launched at New York Shipbuilding in Camden, New Jersey. Originally ordered as a light cruiser, the construction was altered in order to counter the threat by Japan. She served not only in the U.S. Navy but also in the Marine Nationale as Bois Belleau R-97, returned to the U.S. in 1960, she was scrapped in 1962. Her launch did not make headlines per say, but it was referenced in several stories the following day.
