Daily Event for December 11, 2008

After leaving Freetown on Nov. 19 the Empire Statesman reported engine trouble two days later, she was not able to keep up with the other ships in convoy SL-56.S. The convoy sailed on, but the Empire Statesman sailed alone. She almost made it, but on Dec. 11, 1940 the U-94 torpedoed and sank the ship 158 miles west southwest of Rockall. All thirty-two men on board perished.
