Daily Event for August 28, 2008

On Aug. 28, 1917 the SMS U-28 torpedoed and sank three ships in the Barents Sea about 120 miles north of the North Cape, the Whitecourt, Marselieza and the Hidalgo. I have little information on the sinkings except that they were bound for Archangel from Manchester and they were both built at Northumberland Shipbuilding, Howden on-Tyne. Whitecourt was built as Othello, but renamed in 1916 It appears that all on board the Whitecourt survived, however fifteen men on the Hidalgo perished. Marselieza was a Russian ship built in England, I have no information on casualties or survivors.
