The 1,123 ton cargo ship Armenian sailed from Middlesbrough, England bound for Kronstadt, Finland on Aug. 1, 1882 and was never heard from again. The last report of the ship was made by a Lloyd's agent in Lemvig, Denmark on Aug. 23 when he reported that two vessels had sighted a capsized ship about ten miles from Bovenbergen. There was no positive identification, but it is thought this was the Armenian. The only other evidence from the ship was a lifeboat which washed up at Houstrup, Denmark with the body of the wife of the captain and a trunk with her belongings. To my knowledge no trace of the other twenty-two people was ever found. The ship was reported overdue on Sept. 14 and missing on Sept. 21. |
