Daily Event for August 3, 2008

On Aug. 3, 1876 the SS Queensland, a 2,263 ton passenger/cargo ship built at Palmer's in Jarrow sank after being rammed by the SS Barrabool off Wilson's Promontory in Australia. The ship had unloaded a cargo of tea in Melbourne and was bound for Sydney with 105 people on board when the 600 ton Barrabool appeared and rammed the ship at full speed. The fatal blow sent the ship to the bottom in half an hour, but in that time the lifeboats were launched along with those from the Barrabool and 104 people were saved. The only casualty was a crewman, James Thompson from Scotland. The wreck remained lost until 2007 when it was accidentally located by local divers.
