Daily Event for July 9


July 8, 1942 the Italian submarine Perla fired a torpedo at the corvette HMS Hyacinth K-84 off the coast of
Lebanon. Fortunately for the British crew the torpedo missed, the Italian crew would pay for their mistake.
Hyacinth depth charged the Perla until her commander Bruno Napp, decided to surface and surrender. The
attack killed sixteen of Perla's crew and the survivors were taken POW. Perla was towed to Beirut, repaired
and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS P-712. In 1943 the boat was transferred to Greece and
renamed Matrozos.
