Daily Event for March 19, 2008

March 19, 1930 the North German Lloyd liner Europa departed on her maiden voyage, a voyage that had been delayed by her sinking while fitting out. During the war the Germans had plans to use her for the invasion of England (Operation Sealion), but this never materialized, neither did their other plans for her.

She was captured by the Allies in 1945 and was finally used as a troopship. After returning US and Canadian troops she was turned over to France and was renamed Liberte, she sank again after hitting the wreck of the Paris, but she was repaired and made her second maiden voyage in 1950. She was scrapped in 1961.
