Daily Event for September 5

A thirty-nine year safety record came to an end when the SS Cyril collided with the SS Anselm on the Amazon
River on Sept. 5 1905. Cyril was built by John Elder & Company in Govan, Scotland in 1883 for the Castle
Mail Packet Company as Hawarden Castle, in 1902 she was bought by the Booth Line of Liverpool and
renamed Cyril. The ship was used on the UK to South America route ending up in Manaus, Brazil, deep inside
the Amazon.

The Booth Line had been servicing this route since 1866 and had a excellent record for safety. It ended on that
September day when two of their own collided, the Anselm was also owned by Booth and was on her maiden
voyage. No casualty figures are available.
