June 15, 1896 two steamers in Kobe, Japan were crashed together and sunk. The Kawanoura Maru and the Hozui Maru were in the bay when they were hit by a tsunami, an estimated 178 people on board were killed. This was a minor incident when you consider that about 27,000 people on shore were killed. |
