Daily Event for August 30

Aug. 30, 1908 the Hamburg-South America Line's Cap Frio grounded and sank in a storm off Bahia, Brazil.
Cap Frio was the first of five "Cap" ships built for the increasing number of immigrants heading to South
America. She was built in Hamburg in 1900 and was 411' long with a beam of 48', registered at 5,732 gross
tons. Her passenger capacity was 580 with 80 being in first class. Her maiden voyage was made on Mar. 2,
1900 from Hamburg to Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and finally Buenos Aires. Until the time of her loss she
seems to have had a successful if uneventful career. No casualty figures are available.
