Daily Event for October 4

By 1943 the allies were getting better at locating and sinking U-boats. On this day in 1943 it was allied aircraft that scored four kills.

Four U-boats were caught on the surface refueling north of the Azores by pilots from the USS Card CVE-11. Two got away but U-422 and U-460 were sunk with all hands.

South of Iceland two more U-boats were lost to aircraft. The U-279 was sunk by a USAAF Ventura aircraft while the RAF took out the U-389 with a B-24 Liberator bomber. Only 2 of the 113 men on those boats survived.

The USS Card CVE-11 and her pilots racked up quite an impressive record of U-boat kills during the war. The two mentioned above plus the U-117, U-664, U-525, U-847, U-402, U-584.
