Daily Event for January 28


January 28, 2006 The newest destroyer in the US Navy will be commissioned today at Naval Air Station
Pensacola, Florida. The USS Forrest Sherman DDG-98 was built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Ingalls
Operations in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The Forrest Sherman is named in honor of Admiral Forrest Sherman
who was the youngest man to serve as Chief of Naval Operations. The ship was christened on October 2, 2004
by Mrs. Ann Sherman Fitzpatrick, daughter of Admiral Sherman. Commander Michael G. Van Durick will serve
as her first commanding officer.
