Daily Event for August 2

August 2, 1943: On it's 10th patrol luck ran out for the U-106. The U-106 had a very productive career sinking 22 allied ships including the Zealandic on Jan. 16, 1941 with all 73 on board. She had also damaged the British battleship HMS Malaya taking her out of the war for over four months.

In October 1941 while fighting heavy seas the entire watch crew were washed overboard and lost, a fact that was not known to anyone until the next crew opened the hatch and found them missing. The U-106 was attacked by an RAF aircraft in July 1942 but successfully avoided any heavy damage and escaped, however the watch officer was killed and the commanding officer was wounded.

The final patrol of the U-106 was the under a new commander, Wolf-Dietrich Damerow, this was his first and last command. He was caught on the surface by RAF aircraft and depth charged. Twenty two of the crew were killed with thirty six surviving, including Damerow.
