Daily Event for April 19


April 19, 1943 The USS Canberra CA-70 was launched at Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Mass. The USS Canberra was named in honor of the HMAS Canberra which was lost at the Battle of Savo Island along with USS Astoria CA-34, USS Jarvis DD-393, USS Quincy CA-39 and USS Vincennes CA-44.

Canberra served through the remainder of the second world war being torpedoed and knocked out of action off Okinawa on Oct. 13,1944. Canberra earned seven battle stars in world war 2 and was later converted into a guided missile cruiser being scrapped in 1980.
