April 2, 1943: The Melbourne Star was torpedoed and sunk by the U-129 about 500 miles southeast of Bermuda. Out of 117 on board only 4 survived. The survivors drifted in a lifeboat for 39 days until they were found by a Catalina aircraft and rescued. |
