October 18, 1944: The USS Bluegill SS-242 sank six ships in one attack. Bluegill was built by the Electric Boat Division at Groton, Connecticut and commissioned in Nov. 1943. She made six war patrols in World War 2 sinking 19 ships totaling 65,147 tons including the cruiser Yubari on Apr. 27, 1944. On Oct. 18 Bluegill sent four freighters a passenger/cargo ship and a destroyer escort to the bottom. She served in the US Navy until 1969 and was disposed of by scuttling on Dec. 3, 1970 off Maui, Hawaii.
