Daily Event for October 2

October 2, 1942: The British cruiser HMS Curacoa D-41 was sunk in a very strange way. She was escorting the Queen Mary which was transporting troops to England. The lookout on the Curacoa reported seeing a submarine on the port bow. The Queen Mary turned to starboard, and while in pursuit of the U-boat the Curacoa crossed the bow of the Queen. She was cut in half in an instant, the two halves were separated by 100 yards. Because of the concern that a u-boat was in the area and because of his responsibility for his passengers and crew, the captain did not even slow down. Queen Mary was badly damaged by the collision but the Curacoa and 338 of her men were lost. There were only 26 survivors.
