Note the bottom photo at top left of Befehlschaber der Unterseeboote [commander-in-chief U-boats] Vizeadmiral Karl Dönitz, awarding the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuz [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross] to Kapitänleutnant Georg-Wilhelm Schulz, commanding officer of U-124. Schulz sank 19 ships for over 89,000 tons between Aug. 25, 1940 and Apr. 13, 1941. He survived the war and died in 1986. |
Note the photo at right of SS-Sturmbannführer Kurt Meyer who was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuz. He would get the nickname "Panzer Meyer" and would later receive the Eichenlaub [oak leaves] and Schwerter [swords] for his Ritterkreuz. Meyer survived the war and died in 1961. |
