During the evening of Mar. 5/6, 1940 three German merchantmen departed Curacao attempting to return to Germany. One of them was the Hannover, a new ship built at Bremer Vulcan in 1939. When she entered the Mona Passage (the strait between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) on March 7/8, 1940 she was intercepted by HMCS Assiniboine I-18 and HMS Dunedin D-93. The normal procedure was for the Germans to scuttle, but the boarding party from Dunedin got the seacocks closed and began to put out the fires. She was taken as a prize and finally sailed to the U.K. After being converted into an ocean boarding vessel she was again converted, this time into the first escort carrier in the Royal Navy, HMS Audacity. On Dec. 21, 1941 U-751 managed to do what her original crew could not, she was torpedoed and sunk. |
