Off the coast of North Carolina on January 15, 1918 the battleship USS Michigan (battleship #27) was sailing with other ships of the Atlantic fleet in a violent storm, the high winds and rough seas proved to be too much for the forward cage mast on the battleship and it collapsed. This was apparently the first time such an accident had happened in the U.S. Navy. Tragically six sailors lost their lives in the incident. |
