The sailing ship Alice, loaded with a cargo of dry cement, was approaching the mouth of the Columbia River on Jan. 15, 1909 looking for a pilot to guide her over the bar when she was run up on the shore in a storm. The crew all managed to make land but the cement in the hold hardened making salvage impossible. This was a pitiful end of a very long voyage. Alice, a French ship, had left London for Hobart, Australia then on to Portland, Oregon, the trip had taken 176 days. |
