Daily Event for June 13

June 13, 1940 the armed merchant cruiser HMS Scotstoun was sunk by the U-25 off the Outer Hebrides. She
was built in 1925 as the passenger ship Caledonia for the Anchor Line but requisitioned by the Admiralty for
use as an AMC in Aug. of 1939. She served with the 10th cruiser squadron until her loss.

On June 13, 1942 the Clan Steamship Line's freighter Clan MacQuarrie was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian
submarine Leonardo da Vinci in the Atlantic about 1,000 miles west of Liberia. While the two events are
unrelated both ships were sunk by torpedo and both were built at Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd. Glasgow.
