Gilbert Fullerton Holcomb, U.S.N. (1893-1973).


Gilbert Fullerton Holcomb was born April 1, 1893 in Hilliard, Ohio. He enlisted in the Navy on May 5, 1917 and served until his honorable discharge on July 23, 1919 at which time his rank was Pattern Maker 1st Class. His service was mostly aboard the U.S.S. Arkansas.  On November 29, 1934 he married Irene I. Kougher (deceased October 16, 2004).  They had four daughters and two sons. Gilbert Holcomb worked for the Don M. Casto Organization in Columbus, Ohio for more than 50 years. As Construction Superintendent, he supervised construction of the first shopping center in the United States, Town and Country Shopping Center, and many other shopping centers in the Columbus area. He worked actively until the time of his death on November 23, 1973 at 80 years of age. He is buried in the Veterans section at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Hilliard, Ohio.


 
These photos are from the photo album of Gilbert F. Holcomb (1893-1973) who served on the USS Arkansas
from 1917-1919. Many were taken by him and show what life was like on the battleship for the regular
seaman. The photos taken by him have never been published before.
