December 14, 1939: Front page of the Lowell Sun, Lowell, Massachusetts. From the headline it seems the propaganda war began shortly after the Battle of the River Plate ended.

December 15, 1939: Front page of the Logansport Press, Logansport, Indiana. The story British Death Watch Lays at River Mouth shows that the British were also adept at using the press for deception. The story claims that the French battleship Dunkerque was en route to join the British warships already on the scene. The Germans again make the claim that mustard gas was used during the battle.
