H.M.S. "FURIOUS" - DECKLANDING TRAINING PROCEDURE

1. INITIAL TRAINING
(a) AVROS. Each pupil will be given a minimum of three landings. The first landing will be made by the Instructor, and the remaining two by the pupil.

Should the Instructor consider that the Pupil requires further landings he will carry on with the instruction until he is confident that the pupil is ready to commence his Service Type Training.

SERVICE TYPE AIRCRAFT
Each Pupil will make three Dummy Runs over the Deck. After each of the first two runs Pupils will turn to port and after completing the third run, if they feel confident of making a landing on the Deck, they will turn to starboard. Providing that the Dummy Runs have been satisfactory they will be permitted to land on. (See Signal Signification below). If it is considered that they require further runs, the "X" flag will remain out.

UNDER NO CONDITION WHATEVER IS A PUPIL TO LAND ON THE DECK UNLESS THE AFFIRMATIVE IS SHOWN.

Should it be decided that the Dummy Runs have not been sufficiently well executed the "G" Flag will be exposed and Pupils will proceed to GOSPORT without delay.

Should the Ship be at any great distance from well known local landmarks the Magnetic Course and distance from the Ship to GOSPORT will be given to each Pupil before leaving the Ship, and in addition will be shown on a large blackboard in the Starboard Navigating Position.

2. REFRESHER TRAINING
The instructions set out in 1(b) above will be complied with in all respects by pilots undergoing Refresher Training. Aircraft will be flown in ballast and under no condition will crews be carried.

FLAG SIGNALS

In these circumstances a large square RED Flag is run between the Port and Starboard Navigating Positions, the affirmative flag is at once hauled in, and all landing operations remain suspended while the RED FLAG is disp1ayed. This signal will be supplemented by two red Very's lights fired one from either quarter of the Flight Deck.

The "G" Flag will be flown from No. 2 Boom.

4. PARACHUTES
Parachutes will be worn by all personnel proceeding into the air.

5. Experienced pilots of the type of aircraft on which pupils are carrying out their training will be available on Deck to assist pupils and see that they are in all respects conversant with their instructions and ready to proceed into the air.
