I am researching the conditions of passengers in steerage/3rd class who traveled on Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in 1899 or 1900. The journey was eastbound, from Germany to America. The passengers would have been emigrating from Germany, with very little money. Do you have any suggestions on how I could find more information? I have found information about 1st and 2nd class for Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, but none on 3rd class/steerage. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you,

I'd like to find out some of the crossing history for the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse.  Were there any crossings from Germany to the US where a pandemic swept through the passengers?  I'm guessing it would've been a spring crossing for 1912, 1913, or 1914.  I know people died & were buried at sea on ocean crossings, but when my Grandmother came over on the KWderG, she claimed that A LOT of people got sick and died. She also became very ill but survived the illness.

I'm sorry, but my details are fuzzy about my Grandmother's crossing. I think I found her in the Ellis Island records, but there are several women her age (16-18) with the same name.  I'm just trying to see if I can narrow down which woman with her name it was.  One of the ways would be to see if any of the KWderG crossings had a history of a lot of the passengers getting sick & dying.  If yes, then I found my Grandmother.

Sincerely,
Linda Hadden

My nephew is doing a report on our family tree and in searching through some of my mother's documents I found my grandfather's original Declaration of Intent from the Department of Immigration and Naturalization when he traveled on the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse from Bremen, Germany to NY. It states that he arrived on September 6, 1897. I was curious to see what the ship looked like and so I did a little research of my own and came upon your website. What a wonderful trip to the past this has been for me.

Thank You,
