Note the report in columns 5-6: "New Reprisals Threat To France After Attack On Nazi Officer"
(General Otto von Stülpnagel, Military Commander of occupied France, sets curfews in Paris. After the war, Stülpnagel was arrested by the Allies for war crimes [he had executed over 100 French civilians,] but he committed suicide before he could be tried.)

Note the report in column 2: "Pocket Battleship May Have Accompanied Raider"
(This report makes a declarative statement that "The raider Steiermark [actually Kormoran,] was accompanied by a German pocket battleship in some of her forays, and it is possible that Sydney was sunk by her." Kormoran was never in company with a pocket battleship, or any other battleship. The Allies, especially the press, referred to the German Panzerschiffe [armored ships or heavy cruisers] Admiral Graf Spee, Admiral Scheer and Deutschland [later renamed Lützow] as "pocket battleships." None of these ships sailed with the raiders. Whoever the writer was could not accept that a modern cruiser, like HMAS Sydney, could fall to a converted freighter, and therefore they suggest that there must have been a bigger ship involved. The report also states that the freighter Eurylochus was sunk by this "pocket battleship" which was not true, it was sunk by Kormoran.)

December 4, 1941: Front page of The Sydney Sun, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Note the headline report: "Were Sydney's Men Machine-Gunned In Water?"
(We know this was not the case, but to be fair, it was a fair question in 1941.)

December 4, 1941: Front page of The Telegraph, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Note the report in column 2: "Colonel Knox Says: Two British Battleships at Singapore"
(You would think that the Secretary of the Navy would consider announcing such information to the world, which included the enemy, was something better left unsaid.)
