Note the report in columns 1-2: "Destroyer Kearny Is Torpedoed Off Iceland; Crew Safe, Ship Continues Under Own Power"
(Contrary to the report, not all the crew was safe, eleven men had been killed in the attack. This was the first time there was loss of life on a U.S. Navy ship attacked by a German vessel in World War II. The attack was made by U-568, which was sunk on May 28, 1942 by British warships.)
[The report mentions the USS Greer incident, which took place in September. For information on that, see "Naval Patrol Hunts Submarine in Attack On Destroyer Greer" in The Evening Star of Sept. 5, 1941.]
Also note the report in column 2: "Roosevelt Awaiting Full Report Before Comment on Kearny"
Also note the report in column 2: "Nobel Prizes Suspended"

October 17, 1941: Front page of The Freeport Journal-Standard, Freeport, Illinois.
(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report at bottom right: "Mary Ellen Reardon Passes 6th Birthday; Mysterious Sleep Grips Her Since 1938"
(This is the last wartime report I was able to find about Mary Ellen. The last report about her I was able to find was published on Sept. 15, 1946, and she was only one of the subjects in the article.)
[See "Doomed To Sleep" by William Engle in The San Antonio Light of Sept. 19, 1946.]
Also note the report at bottom left: "Kearny's Stout Construction Credited With Keeping Her Afloat; Probably Hit on Bow"
(As usual, the first reports, I should say "opinions," are wrong. Kearny was not hit in the bows, but took a direct hit on the starboard side, amidships.)

Also note the report in column 7: "House Passes Bill To Arm Cargo Ships"

October 17, 1941: Front page of The Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas.

(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in column 5: "Death Probed - Cyanide Discovered In Medicine"
(Long before the Tylenol cyanide poisonings of 1982. Guess it's true, what goes around, comes around.)
