Note the report in column 4: "Bismarck Plan to Bomb Canada"
(According to Reuters, Asst. State Dept. Administrator, Mr. Robert Derming, who was "quoting British sources" claimed that German battleship Bismarck, which carried two aircraft (Arado Ar-196 float planes) intended to use those two little aircraft to single-handedly take the war to North America and bomb Quebec AND Montreal. Fortunately for the Canadians, Bismarck was sunk on May 27, 1941 before the two cities could be leveled by the two 100 lb. bombs carried by each plane. Yesterday's version was a little more detailed.)

Note the report in column 6: "Hunt Raider In Pacific"
(The AP report, quoting "shipping sources" claim the Dutch passenger/cargo ship, Kota Nopan, had been sunk by a German raider. The information was incorrect. Kota Nopan had been captured by the German Hilfskreuzer [auxiliary cruiser] Komet on Aug. 17, 1941. None of the 51 on board were killed. The ship remained in German service until Mar. 3, 1941 when it was located and stopped by USS Eberle DD-430 and USS Savannah CL-42. Unknown to the boarding parties, scuttling charges had already been set and when they went off, it killed none of Eberle's crew.)
