(Vizeadmiral Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière, legendary commander of U-35, was killed in aircraft accident at Le Bourget airport near Paris, France on Feb. 24. He was the top scoring submarine commander of all time sinking 195 ships for a total of over 455,000 tons. He also damaged a further 8 ships for over 34,000 tons.)

(Famed Great War ace, Eddie Rickenbacker hurt in plane crash. He would be in another aircraft mishap in Oct. 1942 when a B-17 he was in ditched in the Pacific and spent 24 days in a life raft before he and six others were rescued. Secretary of War Henry Stimson had sent him on a tour of air bases in the Pacific Theater of Operations to review both living conditions and operations, but also to deliver personally a secret message of rebuke to General Douglas MacArthur from the President for negative public comments MacArthur had made about the administration and disparaging cables sent to General George C. Marshall.)
