Note the report in column 5: "New York Mayor Mayor Urges Air-Raid Precautions"
(The report states that Mayor La Guardia said at the Mid-West regional meeting of Mayors that east and west coast cities should prepare for the possibility of air raids. He is quoted as saying "I grant there is a 97 per cent possibility that we may not be attacked, but neither the United States Government nor any Mayor can take the 3 per cent chance." The report does not mention how much money he would require from the federal government to carry out the air defense of New York from the mythical German planes with the range of reaching New York, or any other U.S. city. He was not the first politician to make such an absurd statement, in June of 1940 Michigan Governor Luren Dickinson called on the War Department to provide men and material to defend Detroit from air attack. This was even more absurd than La Guardia's statement considering how far Detroit is from the east coast.)
